About Skopje

Skopje is situated in the Skopje valley, on the banks of the Vardar, the biggest Macedonian river, and has an average height of 240 m to 350 m above the sea level. The valley occupies a surface area of 1,840 km?.

Skopje is the capital of Macedonia, having about 506,926 (census 2002)inhabitants. It is located in the south of Europe, in the Balkan Peninsula. It is one of the important traffic focal point, an intersection of the roads of South Europe.

Skopje is the capital of Macedonian culture, education, science and economy. As a result of its tumultuous history, many nations live in Skopje for centuries, and the majority of the population make Macedonians (86%) of Orthodox persuasion. The official language is Macedonian, while foreigners are recommended to use English in communication.

How to reach:
Most convenient way to reach Skopje is by plane at the International Airport Alexander the Great, only 20 km far to the east of Skopje, where flights arrive from and depart to almost all European capitals. From the airport the most convenient way to arrive at the hotel or city centre is by taxi (it costs around 20EUR). Upon your requirement we can organize taxi from the airport to the hotel.

This year, the Faculty of Economics in Skopje, Macedonia celebrates its 60th anniversary. Throughout these six decades, we worked hard to distinguish ourselves as a top academic institution in Macedonia in the field of economics and business. Building on our respectable tradition of excellence in education and research, we announce the International Conference on:

The Challenges to Economic Theory and Policy in the Aftermath of the Global Economic Crisis

Undoubtedly, the global financial and economic crisis of 2008-2009 represents the most important episode in the economic history of the world after World War II. What initially began as a pure financial turmoil, later on, it turned out to be a worldwide disaster, forcing prominent financial institutions to collapse, causing countries to become virtually bankrupt and prompting governments to engage in massive interventionism of unprecedented scale and form. As such, the crisis provides an exciting topic for scholars, businessmen and policy makers to discuss and to share their ideas on both the crisis causes and consequences.

Specifically, the Conference will cover the following broad themes:

Economic theory and key macroeconomic policies

  • Is the modern macroeconomics in crisis?
  • New challenges of the modern macroeconomics:
  • The search for a new consensus or a paradigm shift?
  • In search for new microeconomic foundations of macroeconomics
  • The role of monetary and fiscal policies in deep recessions
  • The rules versus discretion debate revisited
  • The economic policy response to crisis in transition economies

Microeconomic issues

  • Resource allocation: the quest for optimal combination of markets and government intervention
  • The areas of market failures and the approaches to their regulation
  • Regulation, deregulation and re-regulation
  • Economic institutions and the importance of their efficiency and quality for the business climate

The role of the financial markets and institutions in the financial and economic crisis

  • Banks, credit markets and interest rates
  • The future of non-bank financial institutions and capital markets
  • The global financial crisis and the patterns of company finance
  • Investment decision-making before and after the crisis
  • The impact of the crisis on financial reporting, accounting and auditing

The global financial and economic crisis and the business sector

  • Company restructuring in the aftermath of the crisis
  • The crisis and the corporate strategic response
  • Organisational change, human resource and knowledge management
  • Innovative business models and crisis management
  • Networked enterprises, IT governance and e-business
  • The impact of the crisis on the small and medium enterprises
